Topping MCA 2023–24: What Studying While Building Taught Me

How I balanced an active client base and a company while finishing at the top of my MCA class — the study systems, the trade-offs, and the honest cost.

Being named MCA topper for the 2023–24 academic year was not the result of studying more than everyone else. It was the result of studying more deliberately.

The challenge was real: I was simultaneously running TechTrio Automation, managing active client projects, and sitting an intensive postgraduate programme. Time is finite; something had to give. What gave was everything non-essential — late nights that weren't productive, content consumption that wasn't purposeful, and the general low-grade busyness that fills time without building anything.

The system I settled on was simple: two hours of deep academic study every morning before client work began. No exceptions, no rescheduling. Morning time is protected because it's before the day's entropy — client messages, deployment issues, meeting requests — has a chance to consume it.

For exam preparation I focused on first-principles understanding rather than memorisation. Computer Science examinations at postgraduate level reward the ability to reason from fundamentals more than they reward recalling specific facts. When I encountered an unfamiliar exam question, I could usually construct an answer from principles even without having seen that exact question format before.

What did it cost? Social time, primarily. The evenings I spent studying were evenings I wasn't available for other things. That's the honest trade-off. I'm comfortable with it — the year built capabilities that compound. But I wouldn't pretend the balance was effortless.
